4 Home Improvement Projects to Tackle Before Autumn

Believe it or not, autumn is almost here. While you’ve been enjoying the summer, and maybe tackling some of those big home improvement projects you’ve been putting off, the calendar has been flipping closer and closer to fall. Soon, school will be getting started, nights will be getting cooler, and a whole new kind of hustle and bustle will take over our days. So what can you do to get your house ready before fall? Here are four home improvement projects to get in before the new season:

1. Repair, Replace, or Reseal Your Windows

With cooler weather coming sooner than you think, it’s time to check the most common place houses lose heat – the windows. The caulk around the windows may need to be reapplied, but you also may decide that this is the year to put in energy-saving upgrades. If any windows were damaged during your summer fun, definitely get those replaced or repaired before the busy school season hits.

2. Repair Cracked Sidewalks or Driveways

In cold weather, cracked concrete and asphalt only get worse. What was a hairline crack mid-summer can become a serious safety hazard after all the ice and snow hit. Hiring a professional service to repair those cracks now will ensure that your driveway and walkways are in great shape next spring, and save you money. A larger repair down the road would be far more expensive than repairing a small crack now.

3. Clean Out the Gutters

Gutters are the system that allow water to flow away from your house in bad weather. Without them, it would be easy for water to puddle right against the house, or on the roof, and damage the home. During the autumn, leaves will be falling everywhere, and most likely clogging up the gutters – and it will be much harder to clean them out if you started the season off with clogged gutters. Now is a good time to get those free of any debris.

4. Power Wash the Exterior

The summer brings a lot of mowing and other outdoor activity that can leave stains on the sides of your house – especially near the bottom, where you might not notice them if you have shrubs or other plants. If it’s been a wet summer, or you’ve hosted a lot of water balloon fights lately, you may even start to notice some mold growing on the siding. Now is the best time to power wash the exterior, before it gets too cold to address. Leaving this mold or staining there until next spring could lead to major damage to your siding.
